Day 15: Longyearbyen to Oslo
We bid farewell to Longyearbyen and head to the airport for our return to Oslo. This final leg completes our Arctic journey, but the true richness of this experience lies in the memories etched deeply within our hearts and spirits.
Every moment of wonder, every shared connection, and every challenge overcome becomes a lasting part of who we are, guiding us home and reminding us of the beauty and fragility of life in this vast, awe-inspiring world.
We'll be travelling during the summer, which means we'll be in the middle of the sunny polar summer season in Svalbard! It's the most pleasant time of the year in the archipelago, with average temperatures of 3-7 ˚C. During these months, the tundra is cleared of snow and we'll be able to enjoy the gentle midnight sun, which doesn't set until late August. Those polar days and nights intertwine perfectly, giving both wildlife and us, the travellers, the opportunity to make the most of this extended light to be more active and explore the beauty of the region.
Suggestions for your packing list:
Base Layer: Opt for thermal underwear that will keep you warm without adding bulk (silk or polypropylene are common choices). Also be sure to bring several pairs of tall, sturdy socks, as well as thinner socks made of polypropylene or merino wool.
Midlayer: For this layer, choose warm pants like ski pants, fleece tops and pants, loose-fitting wool sweaters, or a midweight fleece jacket. Add waterproof pants (Gore-Tex is a great option!) to keep moisture out.
Outer Layer: Don't forget to pack a fleece neck warmer, waterproof gloves with thin polypropylene gloves so you can easily handle your camera, a hat, a breathable waterproof/windproof jacket (Gore-Tex again!), and sturdy shoes with grid-like rubber soles (no sneakers).
On board the ship: The environment on board will be relatively dry, warm and comfortable, so be sure to wear t-shirts and other casual, comfortable clothing. It would also be helpful to have comfortable closed-toe shoes (leave the sandals behind!), earplugs and an eye mask to ensure a good night's sleep. A soft luggage bag or hiking backpack will also be useful for easy storage.
Photography Packing: If you plan to take photos, consider leaving the tripod at home unless you need to shoot video or have a heavy lens. Bright conditions can make it difficult to take photos with a smartphone or compact camera, so be sure to practice before you head out. Also, don't forget to pack a pair of binoculars to enjoy wildlife and a cleaning kit for your camera and lenses.
Highly recommended: Don't forget to pack sunscreen, lip balm, a strap for your sunglasses, an extra camera in case of accidents, and a swimsuit in case you want to take a refreshing polar bath.
With the right clothing, you can make the most of your Arctic adventure during the summer!
